SN AboitizPower Secures Financing for 80-MW Battery Storage Expansion in Benguet
SN Aboitiz Power (SNAP), a joint venture between Aboitiz Renewables, Inc. and Scatec ASA, has officially reached financial close for two new 80-megawatt (MW) battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Benguet. The announcement on February 3, 2026, marks a key milestone as SNAP prepares to develop a 40-MW BESS at Binga Hydroelectric Power Plant (Phase 2) and a 40-MW BESS at Ambuklao Hydroelectric Power Plant, both co-located with existing hydro facilities. These systems are designed to provide fast-response ancillary services to the Luzon grid, enhancing stability and supporting reserves market operations.
This expansion builds on SNAP’s growing BESS portfolio, which already includes a 24-MW system at Magat Hydroelectric Power Plant, operational since 2024, and additional projects—40 MW at Binga and 16 MW at Magat—slated for commercial operations later this year. Once fully operational, SNAP’s total battery storage capacity will reach 160 MW, reinforcing its role in integrating variable renewable energy sources while managing real-time grid frequency fluctuations. By combining hydro and battery storage technologies, SNAP and Aboitiz Renewables are advancing a more resilient, flexible, and sustainable energy portfolio, supporting the Philippines’ renewable energy transition and long-term energy security goals.
