Marcos Jr. Leads Launch of Globe–Starlink Partnership to Deliver Nationwide Satellite-to-Mobile Connectivity
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. witnessed the official launch of Globe Telecom’s partnership with Starlink, marking a major milestone in the Philippines’ push toward universal connectivity. Globe becomes the first mobile network operator in the country and in Southeast Asia—and the second in Asia—to introduce Starlink’s Direct to Cell (DTC) satellite service, a breakthrough technology designed to extend mobile access to areas beyond the reach of traditional terrestrial networks.
Starting this year, the Direct to Cell service will enable Filipinos using standard LTE mobile phones to access essential mobile services, including data for video, voice, and messaging applications, as well as text messaging, anywhere with a clear view of the sky. The initiative is expected to significantly improve connectivity in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas, particularly across the country’s more than 7,600 islands, where network deployment remains challenging.
The partnership reflects Globe’s continued investment in advanced technologies that support the government’s goal of providing connectivity to all Filipinos. By leveraging Starlink’s constellation of more than 650 low-Earth orbit satellites, Globe aims to address persistent mobile coverage gaps and enable broader access to digital public services, including those available through the eGov App. The satellite-based service is also designed to enhance disaster resilience by serving as a critical backup when terrestrial infrastructure is damaged or unavailable during natural calamities.
Direct to Cell technology functions with standard LTE devices, extending mobile access to underserved communities and the remaining four percent of the population living outside terrestrial coverage. Rural and maritime areas stand to benefit from more reliable communications, supporting social inclusion, economic participation, and improved emergency response. In disaster scenarios, the service can help ensure continuity of essential communications for affected communities and first responders.
“This partnership with Starlink marks a historic step in our mission to build a digitally inclusive nation,” said Carl Cruz, Globe President and CEO. “Connectivity is no longer a privilege—it is a lifeline and a modern-day utility that fuels individual opportunity and national economic progress. By extending mobile reach through satellite technology, we are ensuring that every Filipino, from urban centers to the most remote barangays, can stay connected.”
Starlink’s Direct to Cell service, developed by SpaceX, operates as a satellite-to-mobile wireless network that functions like a cell tower in space, requiring only an LTE phone and a clear view of the sky. Already serving more than 12 million customers across 22 countries, the service has proven critical during emergencies by delivering millions of SMS messages and wireless alerts when ground-based networks were disrupted.
As the world’s largest 4G/LTE coverage provider, Starlink’s collaboration with Globe positions the Philippines at the forefront of next-generation mobile connectivity in the region. The partnership underscores Globe’s vision of a more connected, resilient, and inclusive Philippines—where access to essential communication is available to all, regardless of location or circumstance.
