PSPC Commences Commercial Production of New Mobile Memory Devices

Clark Freeport, Pampanga—(PHStocks)—Phoenix Semiconductor Philippines Corp. (PSE: PSPC) announced that it has successfully stabilized its commercial production of the new memory devices called the Embedded Multi-Media Card (eMMC).

The company disclosed that the trial production in latter part of 2016 reached 2.8 million units. Planned production for the first quarter of 2017 is expected to total 5.8 million units after passing qualification and quality audits from Samsung Electronics of South Korea.

“The expansion of PSPC into the production of this new generation of memory device earmarked for mobile products is another step in the evolution of the company,” said PSPC President Byeongchun Lee.

The company, with impetus from its parent company SFA Semicon of Korea, is diversifying its semiconductor manufacturing capability. The eMMC is a high memory density device with capacity ranging from 128 to 256 gigabytes (GB) due to a novel architecture using vertically embedded MMC interface, flash memory and controller in a compact format.

The devices are used in smartphones, tablets, game consoles, set-top smart TV as well as automobile GPS and other mobile products with medical, aerospace and industrial applications as a result of its compact size, processing power and high data storage capacity.

The production orders for eMMCs for the incoming year 2017 are currently being finalized by the Korean electronics giant. PSPC expects monthly orders in 2017 to exceed significantly the 2016 orders in view of the continued expansion in demand of mobile products and the development of more GPS and navigation-based applications in other end products.

Lee is confident that with continuous learning and improved efficiencies, the company is also likely to expand into higher-capacity eMMC formats for various other applications in the future.

“Prospects for eMMC based memory solutions are positive, with industry analysts projecting production revenues to reach about $30 billion by 2022 because of the continued advancement of many mobile platform and applications,” he pointed out.

PSPC supplies not just the direct eMMC requirements of Samsung but also of the latter’s end customers.. The company is confident in the improvement in the outlook of the semiconductor industry in 2017.
